In September 2024, Safe Steps proudly achieved our Rainbow Tick Accreditation, marking a significant milestone in our commitment to fostering a culturally safe and inclusive workplace and service for the LGBTIQA+ community.

The Rainbow Tick framework is designed to support organisations to improve the quality of care and services they provide to lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and gender diverse, intersex, asexual and queer (LGBTIQA+) service users, staff and volunteers.

To become successfully accredited, Safe Steps was required to meet six standards that demonstrate a commitment to best practice in LGBTIQA+ inclusive service delivery and workplace policies.

  • Organisational Capability
  • Workforce Development
  • Consumer Participation
  • A welcoming and accessible organisation
  • Disclosure and documentation
  • Culturally safe and acceptable services

While we celebrate this achievement, we recognise that it is only the start of our ongoing journey to improve the experience of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and gender diverse, intersex, asexual, and queer (LGBTIQA+) service users, staff, and volunteers.

As part of this journey, we have implemented several important changes to our organisation. These include comprehensive staff LGBTIQA+ training, the formation of an LGBTIQA+ Community of Practice, updates to key policies, the development of resources such as an inclusive language guide; as well as continuing to work with partners to improve LGBTIQA+ services options and access for people experiencing domestic and family violence. Remaining dedicated to upholding and advancing these Rainbow Tick Accreditation standards, Safe Steps will continue to provide a supportive and empowering environment for all.
